ChatGPT prompt for an Etsy listing (and where AI drafts go wrong)

A chatbot can draft an Etsy listing in seconds, but it guesses facts, miscounts characters and writes like an ad. Here are prompts that work for Etsy, and a checklist for catching what goes wrong.

You paste "write an Etsy listing for my candle" into ChatGPT and get back something that sounds impressive. Then you look closer. The title is a 140 character list of keywords. Two tags are 24 characters long. There's a "60 hour burn time" you never mentioned, and the phrase "must-have" twice.

General AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini can save a lot of typing. But they only know what you tell them, they fill gaps with guesses, and they're bad at counting characters. The ChatGPT prompt for an Etsy listing is where you control that. This guide gives you prompts that work, then the checks to run before anything goes live. If you'd rather not write prompts at all, YelloShelf is a paid option covered at the end.

Give the AI facts and rules, never just a product name.

The one rule: give it facts, not a product name

The biggest mistake is asking the AI to write about a product it can't see. It will invent details that sound right for that kind of product. Instead, paste in a fact sheet:

  • What it is, in plain words
  • Size, weight, capacity, count, materials and colours
  • What it's for and who it's for
  • How it's made, and whether it's made to order or personalised
  • Care instructions
  • Claims you can't make, like certifications you don't hold
  • Tag phrases you've already researched, most important first

Our Etsy tags examples guide covers free ways to find tag phrases buyers really type.

Then tell it plainly: "Only use the facts below. If something isn't listed, leave it out."

Prompt: Etsy title

You're writing an Etsy listing title. Use only the facts below.

Rules: start with what the item is in plain words, then two or three key details like material, size or colour. Keep it short and readable, not a list of keywords. Don't repeat a word. Don't include my shop name.

Give me five options.

Facts: [paste your fact sheet]

Etsy allows up to 140 characters in a title but recommends short, readable ones. Our Etsy title examples guide shows before and after titles by product.

Prompt: 13 Etsy tags

Give me exactly 13 Etsy tags for the item below.

Rules: each tag must be 20 characters or fewer, including spaces. Use multi-word phrases a shopper would type. Don't copy the title. Include a mix: item type, style, material, occasion, who it's for and synonyms. All tags in English.

After the tags, list each one with its character count.

Facts: [paste your fact sheet]

Etsy gives you 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. The character count step makes the AI try, but don't trust the number it gives you (see below).

Prompt: Etsy description

Write an Etsy listing description from the facts below.

Start with one or two sentences on what it is and why someone would want it. Then cover size and materials, how it's made, care, what's included, and personalisation or processing time if it applies. Write like a friendly maker talking to a customer, not an ad. No words like "must-have", "revolutionary", "ultimate" or "next level". Don't add any fact that isn't below.

Where AI listings go wrong

It invents facts

If you leave out the burn time, it may add one. If you don't say what the jar is made of, it may say "recycled glass". These invented details are the most dangerous problem, because they look right, and Etsy buyers often ask about materials and sizes. You're responsible for what your listing says, whatever wrote it.

Check: read every claim and ask "can I prove this?" Delete anything you can't.

It can't count characters reliably

AI chat tools work with chunks of text, not individual letters, so their character counts are often wrong. A tag it says is 19 characters may be 23, and Etsy won't accept it.

Check: paste every tag into Etsy's tag field or a character counter. Never rely on the number the AI gives you. Do the same with tags from YelloShelf or any other tool.

It writes like an ad

Without instructions, AI defaults to phrases like "take your style to the next level", "revolutionary" and "perfect for any occasion". Etsy shoppers often want to hear from the maker, and hype reads as generic.

Check: search the draft for hype words and replace them with a fact.

It stuffs keywords

Ask for "SEO" and you may get a title that's just the same keyword five times. Etsy recommends short, readable titles, and the extra phrases belong in your tags.

Check: read the title out loud. If it sounds odd, a shopper will think so too.

It doesn't know how your item was made

Etsy's Creativity Standards say items created with the use of AI must be disclosed in the listing description. ChatGPT can't know whether that applies, so add that line yourself where it does.

A simple workflow

  1. 1Write the fact sheet once per product.
  2. 2Use the prompt for the field you need, with Etsy's rules in it.
  3. 3Ask for several options and pick the best.
  4. 4Check facts, count characters and remove hype.
  5. 5Paste it in, and check the preview on Etsy.

If you also sell on Amazon, its rules are different. Our guides to Amazon titles and Amazon bullet points cover what to put in the prompt there.

Quick checklist

  • Give the AI a fact sheet, not just a product name.
  • Tell it to use only those facts.
  • Put Etsy's limits and rules in every prompt.
  • Ask for several options.
  • Check every claim against what you can prove.
  • Count tag characters yourself, not with the AI.
  • Add AI disclosure yourself if the item was made with AI.

Etsy listings without prompts, with YelloShelf

General chat tools are free or cheap and work well if you're willing to write good prompts and check every draft. If you'd rather skip the prompts, YelloShelf is a paid tool built for this job. From your product photo, it drafts an Etsy title, description and 13 tags, researched from what's already selling, with a suggested price. It also makes listing images sized per marketplace, and social posts with captions and hashtags for Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, Facebook and X. It doesn't publish to your shop, so you still read it, edit it and paste it in yourself, and the checks above apply to YelloShelf too. To compare paid tools, see our guide to choosing an AI listing generator for Etsy.

FAQ

What's a good ChatGPT prompt for an Etsy listing?

Give it your product facts, tell it to use only those facts, and put Etsy's rules in the prompt: a short, readable title, exactly 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer, and a plain description with no hype. Ask for several options and pick the best one.

Can I use ChatGPT for Etsy tags?

Yes, as a starting point. Ask for exactly 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer, then check each one yourself, because AI tools often miscount characters. Compare the ideas against what you find in Etsy search.

Does Etsy allow AI-written listings?

Etsy's AI disclosure rule in its Creativity Standards is about items created with AI, which must be disclosed in the listing description. Whatever writes your listing text, you're responsible for it being accurate.

Why does ChatGPT get character counts wrong?

AI chat tools read text in chunks rather than letter by letter, so their counts are often off. Always check the length in a character counter or in Etsy's own field.

Why does my AI listing sound like an ad?

Without instructions, AI tools lean on marketing phrases. Tell it to write plainly, list the words to avoid, and replace any hype that's left with a specific fact about the product.
