What Etsy's new title rules say

Etsy explains its new title guidance in the Seller Handbook article New Guidance for Listing Titles, and a Tool to Help, and the listing form rules are on its How to Create a Listing help page. Put together, these are the Etsy title guidelines for 2026:

• Titles can be up to 140 characters, but Etsy suggests using fewer than 15 words.
• Clearly state what the item is, then add the key details that make it special.
• Use objective details, like colour, material and size.
• Don't repeat words or phrases.
• Leave out subjective words, such as "perfect".
• Leave out price and shipping details.
• Only include holidays, occasions or recipients if they're essential to what the item is. Etsy's example is "Halloween costume".

The words you take out aren't lost. Etsy's guidance moves gifting words, subjective words and extra search phrases into your tags, attributes and description, which Etsy still uses in search.

Each one names the item and adds two or three facts. None of them says "gift", "cute" or "best".

Etsy says the order of words in your title doesn't have a direct effect on search ranking, but putting the most important words first helps shoppers see what you sell at a glance, which can bring more clicks. So write for the person scanning search results, not for an algorithm.

Key details are facts a buyer uses to choose: material, colour, size, count, style, personalisation, or the app a digital file works with. Here's how to build one:

1. 1Name the item in the words a buyer would search. "Soy candle", not "Little Jar of Calm".
2. 2Add the detail that sets yours apart. "Amber and cedarwood soy candle".
3. 3Add one or two practical facts. "in glass jar, 8 oz".
4. 4Stop there. If you pass about 15 words, you're adding words for search, not for people. Move them to tags.

Result: "Amber and Cedarwood Soy Candle in Glass Jar, 8 oz, Cotton Wick". It reads like a product, and a shopper knows exactly what they're getting.

If your art has its own name, like "Morning Tide No. 4", put that name in the description. Buyers search for what the print shows, not what you called it.

Digital titles need one thing physical items don't: what the file works with. Say the format (PDF, printable), the app (Canva, GoodNotes) or the paper size, so buyers know it'll work for them before they click.

Etsy title length and character limit

The Etsy title character limit is 140 characters, including spaces. That's a ceiling, not a target. Every "after" title in this guide is under 90 characters, and most are 10 to 13 words.

A few more length and character rules worth knowing:

• Fewer than 15 words is Etsy's own suggestion on its listing help page.
• Some symbols can only appear once. Etsy's developer documentation says the percent sign, the colon, the ampersand and the plus sign can each be used only once in a title. A comma or one colon is enough to separate details.
• Your listing URL comes from your first title. Etsy builds the listing's web address from the title you publish with, and it doesn't change when you edit the title later. Get the first version right.

Shoppers scanning a busy results page read the start of a title first, so a short title that leads with the item does more work than a long one that trails off.

• Changing a best seller's title all at once. If a listing already sells, change one thing and watch your stats for a few weeks.
